Closely from Vatican on the right ashore of the river Tiber is situated Castle Sant’Angelo. The monumental building commited to construct the Roman Emperor Hadrian as his mausoleum in years 76-138 A.D. Later in the Middle Ages the church this circular building had used as a prison, torture chamber and as a papal tower and residence. Castle Sant’Angelo was also interconnected with Vatican by an escape corridor, known as Passete, that allowed the pope walk safely from Vatican to Castle Sant’Angelo. Into this mausoleum were as well laid to rest Roman Emperors from Hadrian to Caracallu.
Presently there is National Museum of Castle Sant’Angelo, dedicating to the history of the building. You can visit and see there all rooms (such as the prison, the rooms of Pope Clementine VII., artworks from ancient artists as Lorenzo Lotto, Carlo Crivelli or Jacob Jordaens, the collection of jewels, weapons, ceramics and the beautiful sculptures).
Castle Sant’Angelo leads to the bridge Sant’Angelo, which is ornated by 10 statues of angels, depictives the Christ’s suffering, by the Bernini and his school.
From Castle Sant’Angelo terraces you can admire the magnificient of Sant Peter’s Church, and on the other side of the river, the center of Rome.
