The 52m high Colosseum (originally the Flavian Amphitheatre) is placed in the center of Rome and from the moment it was built, it still dominates the ancient center.

Colosseum is one of Italian major tourist’s attraction. It was inserted in 1980 by UNESCO in the list of human heritage and in 2007 it became one of the seven Wonderworks of the modern world.

Colosseum is considered as one of the biggest sight in the world.

Colosseum was constructed by emperor Vespasian in 72 AD for enjoyment. But it was his son, Titus, who in 80 AD, completed and inaugurated the amphitheatre. In honor of inauguration were held games lasting 100 days. It was used more than 2000 gladiators and over 9000 wild animals.

Colosseum is consists of three floors constructed in travertine stone and a fourth with windows. It was decorated with statues in the arcades and bronze shields. Colosseum has a capacity of more than 50000 people. The internal seating was managed by through spectators were seated according to their social class. In Colosseum were various ways of entertaining. Such as hunts and battles involving exotic and wild animals (crocodiles, leopards, lions etc.), executions and fights between gladiators mainly imported from Africa. The losers could ask the master for mercy, whose decision depended on the mood of the audience.

Its considered that more than 400000 people were fell in Colosseum.

It was disabled by emperor Honorius 404 AD. After felling into disuse, in the Middle Age was Colosseum used mainly for purposes of aristocracy.

It was also mentioned in many movies as in Roman Holiday, Gladiator, Demetrius and the Gladiators.
